West Nile virus is an arbovirus that causes encephalitis (brain
inflammation). Luckily, it is not prevalent in dogs or cats. In
2003, fewer than 40 cases of dog infection and only one case of cat
infection were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. Most cases of West Nile virus have been reported in
wild birds, horses, and humans.
Diagnosis and TreatmentInfected cats typically show
minor signs, such as lethargy and a slight fever. There are no
identifiable signs in dogs. If your pet is diagnosed with West Nile
virus, she will probably recover fully from the infection.
